December 2025

As 2025 draws to a close, I find this season naturally invites a certain amount of reflection. Reflection on what we accomplished, on the people who made it possible, and on the opportunities that lie ahead. At IMUA, as I look back on an incredible year, I’m struck by the extraordinary power of volunteer leadership.
IMUA is, as I’ve said many times, a volunteer-powered organization. Our board members, committee chairs, speakers, authors, and subject-matter experts generously give their time, perspective, and experience to strengthen not just the association, but the entire inland marine industry. Whether it is serving as a speaker sharing practical lessons during a webinar, a contributor of one of our popular Quick Bites, or a volunteer serving on a regional or technical committees, the cumulative impact is incredible.
The caliber of IMUA’s volunteers directly drives the caliber of the organization itself. Our educational content is stronger because it is shaped by experts in the industry. Our discussions are more relevant because they are grounded in real-world experience. And our community is more connected because it is built on a shared commitment to learning, collaboration, and professional excellence.

This spirit of service feels especially appropriate at this time of year. The holidays remind us of the importance of helping others, giving back, and investing in something larger than ourselves. Those same values show up every day in the work our volunteers do on behalf of IMUA, often behind the scenes. As we look ahead to 2026, this volunteer foundation gives me tremendous optimism. We have a strong bench of engaged members, emerging leaders, and seasoned professionals who care deeply about IMUA’s mission and future.
In that spirit, I want to again encourage members who are interested in continuing their leadership journey to consider applying for IMUA’s Board of Directors. Board applications are due by January 9, and we are always eager to hear from individuals who want to contribute their perspective, experience, and leadership to help guide the association forward. Serving on the board is one of the many meaningful ways to give back to IMUA and help shape its next chapter.

Finally, as we close out the year, I want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and talent in 2025: our board, our committee leaders and members, our speakers, authors, and contributors, and all those who quietly step up whenever IMUA needs them. Your commitment is truly appreciated, and essential to our success.
Wishing you and your families a safe, healthy, and restful holiday season, and an exciting start to 2026!
Warm regards,
Matt Derrick
