October 2026 - Help Shape IMUA’s Future: Board Applications Now Open

Last year, we made a pretty big change to how IMUA selects its Board of Directors, opening up the application process to our membership for the first time. We had a great response, and ultimately welcomed five new directors to the Board earlier this year.

One thing I've really appreciated this year is how much our five newest directors have added to our Board discussions. They've asked great questions, offered ideas, and helped us look at things from different angles. We've taken on quite a few new projects at IMUA this year, and having their input, along with that of our longtime directors, has been a big part of moving those efforts forward.

We're now opening applications for our next group of directors, the IMUA Board Class of 2030, and I'd encourage anyone with an interest in getting more involved to consider applying.

One of the reasons we changed the process last year was to make sure more members had an opportunity to serve. While previous Board experience certainly isn't necessary, getting involved with one of our regional or technical committees is a great place to start, as it demonstrates an interest in helping the association. In fact, committee participation was one of the things our Board Membership & Nominating Committee considered when reviewing applications last year. It's a good way to get more involved with IMUA, meet others in the industry, and enhance your professional development. That said, we welcome the opportunity to hear from all experienced inland marine professionals who are passionate about the industry and eager to contribute.

Board members serve three-year terms, participate in quarterly Board meetings, attend our Annual Meeting each spring, and help with committees and other IMUA activities. There is a time commitment, but it's also a great way to get to know colleagues from other companies, learn more about the industry, and have a hand in where IMUA goes next.

The application deadline is Friday, January 8, 2027.

Our Board Membership & Nominating Committee will review applications and select the candidates to be nominated for election at our 2027 Annual Meeting.

If you're interested, I hope you'll apply. And if someone comes to mind who you think would make a good Board member, please encourage them to consider it as well.
